Vlieland is one of the Dutch North Sea islands that is furthest from the mainland. There is only one village on this quiet, almost car-free Wadden island: Oost-Vlieland. This is where the ferry terminal, good restaurants, a few hotels and B & Bs and most of the sights are located. Outside the village you will find an extensive dune landscape, a long North Sea beach and, in the far west of the island, a seemingly endless expanse of sand, the Vliehors, nicknamed the Sahara of the North and also used as a military training area.
